US Politics

By goodtalking

I don’t know if it is the fault of the media, or just American arrogance, but why do they think that the rest of the world cares about their petty political party internal manoeuvrings.

Currently the two main US political parties are still trying to work out who their respective presidential candidates are, while the actual presidential vote is not until the end of the year. This process has so far taken several months, and, thank goodness, is almost complete. And the results to date: for the Democrats – a draw. A bitter, expensive, protracted, and ultimately pointless, draw. I know draws at a soccer game can still be captivating, and I know that draws at a cricket five day test match can sometimes be enthralling, but the draw presented to us over the last few months has only one redeeming feature. The sheer expense of running their campaigns has ensured that Clinton and Obama have kept the struggling American economy going almost on their own. Consuming huge amounts of fossil fuel, supporting struggling media companies with extensive advertising, killing forests for the printing of vast amounts of propaganda, and the list goes on.

Without them, the country would certainly be in a full-blown recession!

And in the meantime, we – the rest of the world – have been overwhelmed with the daily tally of who has how many delegates, who has produced the biggest gaffe, who has visited the most disadvantaged areas.

WHO CARES!

Nothing we can do outside the US can influence what happens, and nothing they are doing right now can influence us. Give us a headline when one of them wins – perhaps some of the rest of the world might be interested. And then give us another headline when the actual presidential vote is completed. That news might finally have some actual relevance to the rest of the world. If we want to know more, we certainly know where to find it.

But please turn it off now.
